And now it starts…

I did it. I signed up for the National Novel Writing Month. Check out my nifty new word counter on the right.

Now my brain is full of ideas for the novel and I’m fighting not to start. I had to get out of bed at 5am this morning to write the first paragraph. It came to me in the middle of the night and I had to write it down. The beginning of stories has always been the hardest part for me so when the first few lines woke me up I had to get out of bed.

No more, I will not write another word of this story until November 1st, but I will write notes, lots, and lots of notes.

I’m excited! I’ve never done anything like this before and I plan to take advantage of all the extra holidays I get in November to write. I guess Christmas shopping will have to wait until December 1st.

  1. Oh no, you didn’t! I am excited for you. I am thinking about signing up just to motivate myself. But I have a story brewing now (which doesn’t usually happen) and I, too, will have to start before 11/1. I am in a class called “Write Your Life Story,” so I am working on some stuff there.

You already have such a head start though. You’re good a writing a lot (hello, 180k words?). I am good at shorts. So this would be a true challenge for me.

    1. I signed up last night. Each participant has a home page. You select a region and some regions have write-ins or write-a-thons, which sounds really cool to me. There’s tons of support and they totally encourage bad writing and no editing. They say ‘December is for editing’. If you were ever going to try writing something new this is the way to do it. I don’t have solid plot yet for my story just ideas, but I do have solid characters. Think about it, if you decide to do it I’ll support you. Feel free to use me to bounce ideas off of or anything else you need. You could even expand on your Mean Girls story. That’s a good starting point.

      1. I signed up! Two things…how did you add the widget on your blog? I found out on the nanowrimo site where to copy the script, but I can’t figure out how to add it to the side of my page.

Also, how can we become buddies on the site? Did you figure this out?

        1. Awesome! You did it! I added you as a buddy, my username is dayner there too. On WordPress I went to widgets and selected Text ‘Arbitrary text or HTML ‘ and pasted the widget there…I have no idea if the word counter is going to work. I’ll figure that out on November 1st.

  2. DS stuck her bottom lip out and sighed a huge sigh. Will they care if I sign up and fail, she thought.

Mustering what little remaining dignity remained from the bottom of her heavily burdoned heart, she decided to breeze over the the NANOWRIMO site and sign up.

    1. No, they will applaud her bravery and tell her she shouldn’t give in to peer pressure, but they are proud of her for stepping out of her comfort zone.

Yah!! Glad you joined the fun!

      1. AND she will receive the internal reward of doing something that took courage. And even if she doesn’t finish a novel (similar to her friend, Kathan), she will spent a month doing more writing than she ever thought possible!

  3. I signed up before going away for a couple of weeks, and thought that I’d think about what to write about while I was exploring the bayous of Louisiana. But I concentrated on bird watching, taking pictures of hurricane wipe-outs, and eating really good shrimp instead. I’m sure this experience will come in handy at some point though during November.

So now, all I have to do is think about something to write next month.

Oh, yeah, and then write it.

My username is Natasha_G at NaNoWriMo. I would like to be writing buddies with you all, but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.

This should be fun! (I hope.)

    1. I added you as a buddy. Just search my user name, dayner, then click ‘add as a buddy’. I’m sure you have some great experiences from the bayou to write about, sounds like it was a fantastic trip!
